Oikos Church is led by the Staff, Board of Elders, and the Board of Directors.
Aaron and Sara moved to Houston to love on the community, in hope that the community would see Jesus in them. Aaron has been a pastor since 2004, serving most of his time in Houston. Sara teaches at Travis Elementary where she looks for every opportunity to share the hope she has in Jesus. Together, Aaron and Sara have four children: Abrianna, Zachariah, Aaliyah and Amariah. As a family, they are on mission for Jesus.
In August of 2013, Aaron and Sara knew the Lord was calling them to begin something new. Within a couple of months, Oikos Church began gathering in homes and then at Lutheran High North. As a family, they are far from perfect, but through the grace of God they know they are forgiven and empowered through the work of Jesus. As a family they lead a Missional Community in the First Ward dedicated to developing healthy families at Travis Elementary and in the First Ward. Life has never been better!
Director of Worship Arts
Jason is a native Californian who made it to Texas after a 6-year taste of the Midwest. He came to Houston in 2007 to disciple teenagers and launch a new worshiping community in downtown as a worship leader.
He is passionate about raising up missional worship leaders as spiritual parents in the context of spiritual family on mission. Leading worship within a culture of spiritual family focuses not just on the presentation of music as worship, but being an incarnational worship leader; living life on mission and making disiciples. He has also found a love for intimate worship as the scattered Church in missional communities. Both him and Ashley are a part of the Love & War network; a network of worship leaders taking worship on mission.
In addition to overseeing the worship life of Oikos, the Phelps family leads Homebrewed Missional Community in Houston's Near Northside.
Jason is married to Ashley, and is Dad to Isabella, Iliana, and Porter. He enjoys coffee, home-brewing beer, mountain biking, and can be found riding his 49.5cc scooter around town.
Sylvia is blessed with the opportunity to serve at Oikos and connect with everyone from the members and throughout the community. She primarily provides support to staff and church members by managing the administrative functions of the church.
Sylvia has been honored to serve on the Texas District LCMS Board of Missions for 11 years as well as working with LINC Houston and Trinity Downtown. Throughout these opportunities, she worked and learned from some incredible church workers who discipled others with simplicity, intentionality and accountability. It was moving to see the way they had a discipline of reproducing the life of Jesus in disciples. In Sylvia’s early years, she worked as a Director of Community Relations and the Foundation for Williams. She has also been a Stephen Minister for 18 years and Stephen Leader for 12 years. Stephen ministry taught her that “only God can provide the cure and we can only provide the His care.” Nearly every facet of her career and volunteer work was focused on empowering others to be leaders. Believing that helping others is leadership in its purest form.
Sylvia and her husband of 31 years, Nelson, are both native Texans who prayed long and hard about joining on the journey with a new church plant. In responding “yes” to God, they have seen Him challenge and prune them while always blessing in ways they could have never imagined. They both love spending time with Oikos family, loving their dog, Chulo and taking road trips! They too are blessed with some wonderful nieces and nephews. Regardless of where life leads them, they are blessed to experience the joy of knowing Jesus love and resting in His unfailing plan.
Montrose Lead Minister/Vicar
I am a native of Katy, Texas and lived there the majority of my life before discipling students as a DCE for 3 years in Georgia. Beginning in the fall of 2013, the Lord started to break my heart for the "down-and-outs" of society and I began desiring to see them become a part of a community of believers! This brought me to the realize that the Lord was calling me to leave my full-time, called position in Georgia to move to Houston and see what church planting is all about. Relationships are important to me; starting with a relationship with Jesus then flowing to others. This is key to understanding what it is to be a family on mission in Christ, because we see the relationships Jesus had with the Father, his disciples, and those in the community.
I love Fight'n Texas Aggie sports and will frequently attend football games during the fall!
Rachel grew up in Houston, Texas and graduated from the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in 2012 where she played viola in the symphony orchestra. She graduated from Concordia University Texas in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in religious education with a focus on children’s ministry as a Director of Christian Education. God called Rachel back to Houston to be a part of the Oikos family to learn what it means to be on mission and grow her character, capacity, and competency as a disciple builder and follower of Jesus. Rachel enjoys spending time with kids, playing her viola, snap chatting and spending time with her family. She is also a First Grade Teacher at Parker Elementary in Westbury.

Ian is the son of a Minister. With this came lots of places Ian was able to call home. He was born in Munster, IN, lived five years in Waterloo, IA, spent most of his life in Newton, IA and went to college in Seward, NE at Concordia University Nebraska. When Ian was 16 God started to reveal his plan to Ian. He felt the calling to become a minister using his gifts in music. God began to reveal to him different cultures, genres, denominations and ways that God works through his people. After college Ian was called to minister, teach and lead students grades 9 - 12 at Concordia Preparatory School in Towson, MD just north of Baltimore. At this time Ian began to learn what the real world was like. Teaching High School was a blessing. He learned a lot about relationships and a lot about obedience in what God has called him to do. God began working on Ian’s heart to come to Houston and live life with Oikos in February of 2015 and made it clear in February of 2016. He is passionate about helping people and letting God sculpt him into a great worship leader, but more importantly, a spiritual father longing to chase after the heart of God and share it with God’s people. Ian also works at Whole Earth Provision at their Montrose/South Shepherd location.
