Mars Hill - Week 2 (Acts 17:24-34)

July 26, 2015 Preacher: Aaron Lytle Series: Mars Hill

Verse: Acts 17:24–17:34

Mars Hill - Week 2
Acts 17:25-33

24“He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, 25and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. 26From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. —Acts 17:24-26

GOD OF PLEASURE

HEDONISM
Hedonism defined = the pursuit of pleasure; living for pleasure

34Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. —Luke 12:34

1You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! —2 Timothy 3:1-5

7I will bless the lord who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
8I know the lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
9No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
My body rests in safety.
10For you will not leave my soul among the dead
or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.
11You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever. —Psalm 16:7-11

“Whatever a man depends upon, whatever rules his mind, whatever governs his affections, whatever is the chief object of his delight, is his god.” —Charles Spurgeon

• What are you depending upon?
• What is ruling your mind today?
• What rules your affections?
What is the chief object of your delight?
Is it God or other things?

“If you love anything better than God you are idolaters: if there is anything you would not give up for God it is your idol: if there is anything that you seek with greater fervor than you seek the glory of God, that is your idol, and conversion means a turning from every idol.” —Charles Spurgeon

23Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life. —Psalm 139:23-24

27“His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. 28For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ 29And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone. —Acts 17:27-28

30“God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. 31For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.” —Acts 17:30-31

What do you do with Jesus?

32When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, “We want to hear more about this later.” 33That ended Paul’s discussion with them, 34but some joined him and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the council, a woman named Damaris, and others with them. —Acts 17:32-34
